Why the euro price moves on its own
Gold is priced globally in US dollars, so the euro price is a product of two markets: the gold market and the EUR/USD exchange rate. When the euro weakens against the dollar, gold becomes more expensive in euros even if the dollar price is unchanged — and for a European holder, that currency move is a real gain or loss, not an accounting artefact.
This cuts both ways and it is worth being deliberate about. A euro-based buyer holding dollar-priced gold is implicitly long the dollar; some investors treat that as a feature, since the dollar tends to strengthen in the same crises that lift gold. Either way, the euro figure on this page — not the dollar headline — is what your purchase and your eventual sale will settle at.
Frequently asked
- Why is the gold price different in euros and dollars?
- Gold's benchmark is set in US dollars per troy ounce. The euro price is that dollar figure converted at the current EUR/USD exchange rate, so it moves with both the gold market and the currency market. Gold can be flat in dollars while rising in euros if the euro weakens.
- Which price matters for a European buyer?
- The euro price, because your purchase, your storage fees and your eventual sale all settle in euros. A position can gain in dollar terms and still lose money for you if the euro strengthened over the holding period — the currency is part of the position.
- Is gold VAT-free in the eurozone?
- Investment-grade gold — bars of at least 99.5% fineness and qualifying bullion coins — is exempt from VAT across the EU under the special scheme for investment gold. Silver and platinum are not covered by that exemption. Confirm your own position with a local adviser.
- Where does the euro gold price on this page come from?
- The dollar benchmark is taken from live market feeds anchored to the London auction, then converted at the ECB euro reference rate. Both inputs are refreshed continuously and the timestamp is shown with the quote.
