These are pure-metal values at the benchmark. A dealer's retail price adds a premium over these figures — smallest on the 1kg bar, largest on the 1g bar — which is exactly what our dealer comparison measures.
How the gram price is derived
The wholesale gold market prices metal per troy ounce against the twice-daily London auction settlement administered by the LBMA. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, so the gram price is simply the ounce price divided by that constant. There is no separate gram benchmark — every gram quote in the world is this division applied to the ounce price.
Two consequences follow. First, a gram price and an ounce price always move together by the same percentage; anyone quoting them differently is adding a margin. Second, when you compare a dealer's gram-bar price against this page, the difference you find is the dealer's premium — the single most useful number in retail bullion.
Frequently asked
- How is the gold price per gram calculated?
- The international benchmark is quoted per troy ounce, and one troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams. Dividing the ounce price by that figure gives the price per gram of pure gold. Every gram quote on this page is derived that way from the live benchmark.
- Why do dealers charge more per gram than the spot price?
- The benchmark prices wholesale metal in large bars. Retail products add fabrication, minting, distribution and the dealer's margin, expressed as a premium over spot. Smaller bars carry a higher percentage premium because the fixed cost of making them lands on less metal.
- Is a gram of gold the same as a gram of jewellery?
- No. Jewellery is described by fineness — 24 karat is pure, 18 karat is 75% gold, 14 karat is 58.5%. The pure gold content of an 18-karat gram is 0.75 grams, so its metal value is three quarters of the gram price shown here.
- What is the difference between a gram and a troy ounce?
- Precious metals trade in troy ounces, a unit of 31.1034768 grams — heavier than the everyday avoirdupois ounce of 28.35 grams. When a price is quoted 'per ounce' in a bullion context it always means the troy ounce.
