Pillar guide

How to buy physical platinum with your exit already planned.

Platinum is the industrial precious metal: thinner, more volatile and tax-disadvantaged compared with gold, with a real demand story of its own. Six steps to buying it on purpose rather than on a headline.

  1. Step 01

Understand what you are actually buying

Platinum is not a smaller version of gold. Gold's price is set by monetary demand; platinum's is set mainly by industry, with autocatalysts, chemical processing, glassmaking and electronics consuming the bulk of annual supply, and jewellery taking much of the rest. When you buy platinum you are taking a position on industrial demand and on the concentrated mine supply of southern Africa — not on the monetary system.

That changes the role it can play. Platinum will not reliably behave as crisis insurance, because industrial demand contracts in exactly the downturns when insurance is needed. It is a cyclical precious metal with a supply constraint, and it should be sized and justified on that basis.

  2. Step 02

Anchor quotes to the London benchmark

Platinum, like gold and silver, settles against a London auction benchmark administered by the LBMA and quoted per troy ounce. Our live prices page shows the current level next to the other metals. Every dealer price is that benchmark plus a premium, and platinum premiums run wider than gold's because the retail market is thinner.

Convert any quote to a percentage over spot before comparing. In a market this thin, the difference between a competitive and an expensive dealer is measured in whole percentage points, not tenths.

  3. Step 03

    Resolve the VAT position first

Platinum shares silver's tax problem, not gold's exemption. In most European jurisdictions the purchase carries VAT at the standard rate, which immediately puts a delivered position well under water. The workarounds mirror silver's: bonded or free-zone storage defers the tax until withdrawal, and a small number of jurisdictions treat certain formats more favourably.

Because the tax can exceed any plausible premium saving, the storage decision is effectively made for you in high-VAT countries: vaulted storage in a bonded facility is the cost-efficient structure, and home delivery is a conscious decision to pay the tax for possession. Confirm your own treatment with a local adviser.

  4. Step 04

Choose from a short product list

The retail product range is narrow, which simplifies the decision. Large Swiss refiners produce 1oz and 100g bars with recognised hallmarks, and the major sovereign mints issue platinum versions of their flagship coins. Bars carry the lower premium; coins are more recognisable and, in some jurisdictions, carry tax treatment bars do not.

Avoid anything outside the recognised list. Exotic formats, small refiners without an LBMA-accredited hallmark, and collectible issues all add cost on entry and friction on exit in a market that already has fewer buyers.

  5. Step 05

    Plan the exit before entering

Liquidity is platinum's structural weakness for a private holder. Fewer dealers quote a buy-back price, spreads are wider than gold's, and some platforms that sell platinum do not store it. Before funding anything, confirm in writing: does this dealer buy back, at what indicative spread, and how long does settlement take?

If you hold through a vault platform, check whether the metal can be sold back into the platform's own market at spot-linked pricing, as with gold. If you hold delivered metal, identify at least two dealers willing to quote before you need them.

  6. Step 06

Size it as a satellite position

Whatever your conviction on hydrogen, autocatalysts or African supply, platinum belongs at the edge of an allocation rather than the core. It is more volatile than gold, less liquid, and tax-disadvantaged in most of Europe — three reasons its weight should reflect conviction adjusted for friction, not conviction alone.

Review the thesis annually rather than the price weekly. Platinum trades on slow-moving industrial and regulatory themes; reacting to monthly price moves is how a long-term position becomes a series of poor trades.

The six mistakes that cost platinum buyers the most

  • Assuming platinum hedges like gold

It is an industrial metal with a precious label. In economic contractions it can fall with equities, which is precisely when a hedge is supposed to work.

  • Ignoring VAT in the total cost

Standard-rate VAT on purchase can exceed several years of any premium difference between dealers. Resolve the tax structure before comparing prices.

  • Expecting the historical premium over gold to return

Platinum once cost more than gold and now costs less. That inversion reflects changed demand, not a mispricing that must correct.

  • Buying obscure formats for a lower headline premium

In a thin market, recognisability is liquidity. An unrecognised bar is cheap to buy and expensive to sell.

  • Not confirming a buy-back before purchase

Some channels sell platinum without quoting a competitive buy-back. The exit spread is part of your cost — get it in writing first.

  • Over-sizing on a single demand story

Autocatalyst substitution, hydrogen adoption and supply disruption cut both ways. A satellite weight survives being wrong; a core position does not.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • I understand I am buying industrial exposure with a supply constraint, not monetary insurance.
  • I have measured the dealer's quote as a percentage over the live London benchmark.
  • I know how VAT applies to my chosen product and storage location.
  • My product carries an LBMA-accredited hallmark or a sovereign mint mark.
  • I have the buy-back spread and settlement time in writing before funding.
  • I have identified a second buyer channel in case my primary dealer's terms change.
  • My position weight survives being wrong about the demand story.

Frequently asked

Is platinum a monetary metal like gold?
No. Central banks do not hold platinum reserves, and its price is set predominantly by industrial demand — autocatalysts, chemicals, glass and electronics — plus jewellery. It trades as an industrial precious metal, which means its price follows the manufacturing cycle far more than monetary conditions.
Why did platinum used to cost more than gold?
For most of the twentieth century platinum traded at a premium to gold on scarcity and jewellery demand. That relationship inverted as diesel autocatalyst demand weakened and gold's monetary bid strengthened. There is no rule that the historical premium returns; the two metals now answer different demand stories.
Is platinum taxed like gold?
Generally not. The EU and UK VAT exemptions apply to investment gold specifically. Platinum, like silver, normally carries VAT at the standard national rate on purchase, unless it is held inside a bonded warehouse or free-trade zone. Confirm your own position with a local adviser before buying.
How liquid is physical platinum for a private investor?
Less liquid than gold or silver. Fewer dealers stock it, spreads are wider, and the range of bar and coin formats is smaller. Major sovereign mints issue platinum versions of their flagship coins and the large Swiss refiners produce bars, so a secondary market exists — but expect to wait longer and accept more spread than on gold.
What drives the platinum price?
Vehicle emissions catalysts are the largest single industrial use, so emissions regulation and the split between petrol and diesel drivetrains matter. Hydrogen fuel-cell technology is a potential new source of demand, while mine supply is concentrated in southern Africa, making the price sensitive to power, labour and political conditions there.
Should platinum be part of a precious metals allocation?
It can be, as a small satellite position, but it diversifies differently from gold. Platinum adds exposure to industrial and supply-side themes rather than monetary insurance, and its volatility and retail spreads are both higher. Most frameworks that include it cap it well below the gold weight.
